SUPPORTING THE CANCER VICTIM.
Cancer is a leading cause of death worldwide, accounting for nearly 10 million deaths in 2020, or nearly one in six deaths. The World Health Organization projects that, by 2035, the world could see 24 million new cancer cases and 14.5 million cancer-related deaths a year.
Addressing the rising problem in Low middle income countries is a huge challenge at multiple levels. Some regions have poor infrastructure, or people may not have access to basic health care. The other challenges include; lack of hospitals with necessary equipment, inadequate skilled personnel, limited supply of drugs and vaccines etc.
Over 2,100 people die every year in Uganda due to Cancer. While that number could be brought down, there is a significant lack of equipment for treatment in Uganda posing a huge challenge to citizens.
It is key to note that, correct cancer diagnosis is essential for appropriate and effective treatment because every cancer type requires a specific treatment regimen. Treatment usually includes surgery, radiotherapy, and/or systemic therapy (chemotherapy, hormonal treatments, targeted biological therapies).
Thus, Rotary Uganda, started the campaign to fight against cancer through the purchase of a linear accelerator machine to support in treatment. An initiative spearheaded by Centenary Bank and Parliament of Uganda through the Cancer Run. The cause has continued to gather more support hence getting the association on board to support for the 3rd year running.
The association contributed a total of 6 million shillings to support the construction of the bunker at Nsambya Hospital that will house the Linear accelerator. We believe that at the end of the assignment we will have a full facility to handle cancer ailments.
